the short e sounds similar to but not exactly like the spanish e.
The short i is a shorter, more closed sound than the spanish i.

sometimes the short E sounds like the short I, and vice versa. The important thing is not to pronounce it like a Spanish i (long English E), unless the specific word requires it (column 3)
